The gunman who took 3 employees hostage at the Discovery Channel headquarters in Maryland died after police snipers shot him. James Lee, who was armed with a gun and what appeared to be an explosive device, was shot after a four hour standoff with authorities. He died shortly after he was taken in to custody. The three hostages were released unharmed.Lee entered One Discovery Place around 1 p.m. Wednesday and took hostages in the lobby. Nearly all of the 1,900 employees evacuated the building. Police say “a few” remained on upper floors. The body of missing California doctor Jacquelyn Kotarac was found Saturday lodged in the chimney of her boyfriend’s home, Bakersfield police said Tuesday. Kotarac was reported missing last Thursday after she did not show up for work.Kotarac, 49, was last seen Wednesday night trying to “force her way” inside her boyfriend’s home. Authorities say the boyfriend, who has not been identified, “left the house undetected to avoid a confrontation.” He did not return home that night.When Kotarac did not appear for work the next day, the boyfriend and Kotarac's assistant searched the house but did not find evidence that she had gotten inside. They found her purse, cell phone and money outside the house.That night the boyfriend stayed at the house. He left for Europe on Friday. An Asian man with a handgun and a possible explosive device is holding at least one person hostage in the lobby of the Discovery Channel headquarters in Silver Springs, Maryland. According to witnesses, the man entered One Discovery Place around 1 p.m. and fired at least one shot before shouting, “Nobody is going anywhere.”Authorities are trying to talk to the gunman, who has not been identified. An Air Evac Lifeteam helicopter crashed in Arkansas early Tuesday morning, killing all three people on board. A spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration said there was apparently no distress call from the Bell 206 helicopter before it went down near the Scotland community in Van Buren County around 4:30 a.m.The crew was en route to the scene of a traffic accident to pick up a victim when the crash occurred. A spokesperson for Air Evac EMS said the names of the crew will be released later."This is a tragic day for us here at Air Evac Lifeteam. Residents of a neighborhood in Severn, Maryland are happy that an off-duty federal cop has been charged with shooting and killing a Siberian husky at a community dog park. The incident happened August 2 at the Quail Run dog park.Bear-Bear, a 3-year-old rescue husky, was playing off leash with his owner’s brother inside the park when Keith Elgin Shepherd and his wife came in with their leashed German shepherd. Bear-Bear and the German shepherd began to play roughly. Shepherd asked Bear-Bear’s guardian to call him off, but before the man could react, Shepherd pulled out and gun and shot Bear-Bear.Bear-Bear’s owner, Rachel Rettaliata, said after he was shot he “just went and laid down.” He died of his injuries a few hours later.“We're so angry this guy was able to take our animal for what we feel was no reason at all,” Rettaliata said.Neighbors support Rettaliata. Family and friends of two South Carolina toddlers who were murdered by their mother gathered Friday for a funeral service for the boys. Philip Markoff, who was dubbed the Craigslist Killer after allegedly murdering a masseuse he hired off the Web site, wrote his ex-fiancee’s name in what appeared to be blood on the wall of his jail cell. Massachusetts prosecutors Markoff wrote “Megan” and “pocket” on the wall before taking his own life.Investigators believe “Megan” refers to Markoff’s ex-fiancee Megan McAllister. It is still unclear what “pocket” means.Markoff was found dead in his jail cell Sunday. A Southwest Airlines flight attendant temporarily took a 13-month-old baby girl from her parents after witnessing the mother slap the child in the face.The incident happened on a flight from Dallas, Texas to Albuquerque. The flight attendant told authorities she saw the woman “strike the child with an open hand on the face” because the child would not stop crying. The woman also allegedly slapped the child’s legs and yelled at her to be quiet. The husband was reportedly yelling at his wife for her to be quiet.The flight attendant stepped in to calm the child and parents down. Southwest Airlines contacted authorities to question the Georgia couple upon landing.
